This is one of those fascinating days where no one is having a good time at all, no one, tons of people saying how today was a bad day, like all the good things in the world was used up today

  • Thoughts on GMO (3/25/2013)

Some personal thoughts on GMO crops and products after presenting a ToK (Theory of Knowledge) presentation in school for the IB diploma. For those who do not know, GMOs are Genetically Modified Organisms which are produced, many of the corn (more correctly speaking: maize) are genetically modified to produce more starch and minerals. Statistics show 86% of American corn in 2010 were genetically modified (link), and thinking about the amount of products created from corn is unbelievable. If we think about the product chain that follows, anything ranging from morning cereal, to McDonald Coke relates to corn. Now alot of people, specifically consumers have been complaining about potential health problems that may be caused by GMO products and environmental concerns that can already be seen.

Personally, though I do find that environmental concerns should be a concern, but the health part is strongly debatable (of course this is based upon my understanding of the GMO technology). My argument is like this: I have been eating corn related products almost my whole life, and nothing has happened to me as far as I can  tell. Though there are studies like these (link) that show some indication of possible affects, I do think that we should be careful when we approach situations like these where we are not sure that correlation is equal to causation. I would not choose to question the reliability of the study its self, but I would go to question the validity of this study in correlating the findings upon possible affects to be seen on the human body.

Overall, I do see some arguments that seem considerable to fix, but I feel like now days, the media and the greater population of people who rant about GMOs probably know too less/little to make convincing arguments, and over time leading to bandwagon protests that I do think are unnecessary. Other than that, I do think that it is important to consider the positive impacts that GMO products have brought to humans, removing and banning GMO products would cause a large economic problem that one does not easily solve due to the increased reliance that we have put on GMO products over time.

  • Late Night of An IB Student (#1)

The pains as an Ib student, late at night almost 11PM, have labs that have not started working on yet, sigh*. Getting excited about creating blogs, much more interesting than Physics IA. Just finished all my IB orals, what a relief, art was much more chill than expected, language orals and ToK presentations were a pain, but still managed to get through, and getting through in life just fine~
